Professional Main Line Repair in Clark County WA

Repairs or replacement? That’s often the question when it comes to main line failures. Whenever it’s the best long-term option for your system, we recommend repairs rather than a full main line replacement.

Whatever is causing your problem – whether it’s a buildup of hair, grease, mineral deposits, or rogue tree roots – we’ll start with a detailed inspection for accurate diagnosis. Depending on your plumbing system or property, we’ll recommend either conventional pipe repairs or trenchless repairs.

No matter the issue, our main line repair specialists will solve the failure, clear out your line, and restore it to its original capacity. Once the repairs have been completed, we’ll use specialized equipment to verify that every obstruction and obstacle has been cleared.

Trenchless Main Line Services We Offer

At RJ Plumbing Services, we specialize in cutting-edge, “no-dig” trenchless solutions for main line and sewer line repair and replacement. We can repair or replace your home’s primary outbound pipe with minimal property disruption, often completing the entire job in just one to two days.

Our specialized trenchless main line services include:

  • Trenchless Pipe Lining (CIPP): Also known as “Cured-In-Place Pipe” lining, this method creates a brand-new, seamless pipe right inside your old one. We insert a flexible, epoxy-saturated sleeve into the damaged main line, inflate it, and harden the resin. The result is a smooth, jointless pipe that resists future root intrusion for decades.
  • Trenchless Pipe Bursting: If your old main line is heavily fractured, structurally compromised, or naturally undersized, pipe bursting is the ultimate replacement solution. We pull a heavy-duty, conical bursting head through the old line, shattering the broken pipe outward into the soil while simultaneously pulling a brand-new, continuous HDPE (high-density polyethylene) pipe into place behind it.
  • Horizontal Directional Boring (“Trenchless Boring”): For complex property layouts, home additions, or when a main line needs to follow a completely new route, we utilize trenchless directional boring. This allows our technicians to precisely drill a new path underground and install a seamless main line beneath structural driveways, patios, or mature trees without disturbing the surface.

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they refer to two distinct sections of your home’s outbound plumbing.

  • Your main line (or upper lateral) is the pipe that runs from your home’s foundation through your yard up to your property line.
  • Your sewer line (or lower lateral) is the section that extends past your property line, running under the public sidewalk and street to connect to the city main.

Homeowners are responsible for the maintenance and repair of both sections. Once your sewer lateral reaches the municipal sewer line (sewer main), responsibility for repairs and replacement falls to the city.

>> Looking for sewer line repair and replacement? At RJ Plumbing Services, we offer both sewer and main line services. If you’re not sure which you need, schedule an inspection with our plumbing diagnostic experts.

The confusion comes down to a lack of clarity in terminology in the plumbing industry. Your private sewer line (called a sewer lateral) and the city sewer line (called the sewer main) are two distinct things, but both are sometimes (imprecisely) called the “sewer line.”

When plumbing companies advertise “sewer line repairs,” they are talking about the private line that runs from your property line out into the street to hook into the city system. Even though this pipe sits under the public sidewalk or street asphalt, it exclusively serves your house. As a homeowner, you own it and are financially responsible for repairing it. The city only covers the massive, shared neighborhood main pipe running down the center of the street.

From inside your house, a backup looks exactly the same — wastewater will bubble up into your lowest drains. In most cases, you will need a camera inspection from an experienced plumber to diagnose where in the system the problem is occurring.

You may also be able to spot the difference based on who else is affected:

  • It’s Your Private Line (Main Line or Sewer Lateral): If the backup is only happening in your house, the clog or break is on your line, and you must call a private plumber to fix it.
  • It’s the City’s Sewer Main: If you notice that your neighbors’ drains are also backing up at the exact same time, or if water is bubbling out of a manhole in the street, the city’s main line is blocked. In this scenario, you should call the city works department immediately, as they will fix it at no cost to you.

For the vast majority of homeowners in Clark County, yes, trenchless is usually the best option for a main line repair or replacement. Traditional excavation means turning your beautiful lawn, manicured landscaping, or concrete driveway into a messy construction zone.

However, it isn’t a magic bullet for every situation. Whether it is the absolute best choice for your specific property depends on a balancing act between the condition of your current pipe and what sits on top of your lawn.

Here’s why trenchless is usually the best choice:

  • It Saves Your Landscaping & Driveway: The biggest benefit isn’t necessarily the cost of the plumbing itself; it’s the money you save by not having to rebuild a retaining wall, repave a concrete driveway, or replace mature trees and manicured sod.
  • Speed: Traditional excavation can take 3 to 5 days of heavy digging, leaving your home without water. Trenchless crews can typically line or burst a pipe in just 24 to 48 hours.
  • Longevity: The materials used in trenchless lining (epoxy resin) and pipe bursting (HDPE plastic) are incredibly durable. They are seamless, meaning there are no joints for tree roots to wiggle into.

There are a few specific scenarios where a reputable plumber will tell you that a traditional shovel and excavator are actually the better (or only) choice:

  1. The Pipe Has A “Belly” (It’s Sagging): If your main line has physically sagged into a U-shape over the decades due to shifting soil, trenchless pipe lining will not fix it. The flexible liner will just follow the sag, meaning you will still have a permanent low spot where grease and debris pool, causing chronic clogs. You have to dig those sections up to re-grade the dirt.
  2. The Pipe Is Fully Collapsed: Trenchless lining requires the old pipe to act as a structural guide. If the pipe has completely caved in on itself, a plumber cannot push the camera or the lining bladder through it.
  3. There Is Nothing Valuable Above The Pipe: If your main line runs 4 feet deep through an open, flat, empty dirt yard with no trees, patios, or landscaping, traditional excavation is actually cheaper. Open trenching is highly affordable when there is nothing in the way; trenchless becomes the more economical choice when it prevents you from having to destroy expensive property features.

If drain cleaning doesn’t solve the problem, you may be dealing with a main line or sewer line issue.

Your main line carries all the wastewater your house produces safely out past your foundation and away from your property. All of the smaller pipes that connect to your sinks, toilets, showers, and appliances like your dishwasher and washing machine connect to the main line. That’s why, when your main line fails, your entire home plumbing system fails. In the plumbing industry, this is known as a total systemic backup.

The signs you need to repair or replace your main line include:

  • Multiple Fixtures Backing Up: Flushing a toilet causes raw sewage to bubble up into your lowest shower or bathtub.
  • The “Lowest Point” Rule: The backup will always appear at the lowest physical drain in the house (usually a basement shower, floor drain, or a downstairs bathroom).
  • Consistent Sewer Gas Smell: A persistent foul odor coming from all your lower drains.
  • Gurgling Sounds: When the washing machine drains, your kitchen sink or toilets loudly gurgle and bubble.
